CEDAR HILLS – On January 12, 2013, Cedar Hills will host a FIRST®LEGO®League regional qualifierat Cedar Ridge Elementary. FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology)LEGO® League (FLL) is an exciting, fun global robotics and innovation program that ignites anenthusiasm for discovery, science, teamwork and technology in kids ages 9 to 14. Students have theopportunity to solve real-world challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on athematic playing surface. FLL teams, guided by their imaginations and adult coaches, discover excitingcareer possibilities and, through the process, learn to make positive contributions to society.

In the 2012 Senior Solutions Challenge, over 200,000 children ages 9-14 (9-16 outside US, Canada andMexico) from more than 60 countries will explore aging and how it may affect a person’s lifestyle. Teamsresearch obstacles and then suggest ways to improve the quality of life for the seniors affected. Teamsalso build, test and program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS® robot to solve missions on anobstacle course.
“I am so excited for our city to be one of fourteen locations statewide to host a FIRST®LEGO®Leaguequalifier,” stated Council Member Stephanie Martinez. “Not only is this a great opportunity for the youthin our city to participate in this amazing program but we also get to showcase our beautiful city to over300 participants & spectators. We wish to express appreciation to our fantastic volunteers, City staff,Cedar Ridge Elementary, and the University of Utah for their support.”

Cedar Ridge Elementary is located at 4501 W. Cedar Hills Drive. The event will start at 9:00am and endat 2:00pm.
