Sign Ordinance

Purpose
The purpose of the sign ordinance is to regulate and authorize the use of signs that are compatible with their surroundings, are conducive to promoting safety, limit visual distractions, and preserve and enhance property values. The standards and regulations in the ordinance help balance individual rights and promote civic beauty and order. This ordinance will assist in creating functional, human-scaled signs that are attractive to residents, businesses, and visitors.

Procedures
With permission from property owners, and a $1 permit per sign from the City, approved signs may be placed on private property only. All signs of any type placed in the City’s right-of-way will be removed. The complete sign ordinance may be obtained at the City office or viewed from the link at the bottom of this page. Please refer to the complete sign ordinance regarding development signs and signs in commercial zones, including a list of acceptable and unacceptable sign types.

Signs in residental zones
The following criteria apply to signs in residential zones.

  • All signs require a permit and/or approval from the City. A numbered sticker will be issued for temporary signs. Short-term signs and campaign signs do not require a permit, but do require approval regarding type and size.
  • Real estate “For Sale” signs are allowed up to one (1) year.
  • Temporary signs are allowed up to three (3) months in any six (6) month period.
  • Short-term signs are allowed up to three (3) days before and immediately after the purpose.
  • One (1) sign is allowed per lot or parcel with the exception of campaign signs.
  • All signs may have a sign area no greater than eight (8) square feet and a sign height no greater than six (6) feet.
  • Lighted signs, pennant signs, or balloon signs are not allowed.

The ordinance addresses a number of issues such as criteria for residential and commercial zone signs, placement of signs, required permits for signs, and other items. Click here to view a complete copy of this ordinance.

Finding other codes and ordinances
The City Code (off-site link) of the City of Cedar Hills contains ordinances up to and including ordinance 6-1-2004A, passed June 1, 2004. Ordinances of the City adopted thereafter supersede the provisions of this code to the extent that they are in conflict or inconsistent therewith. Consult the City office in order to ascertain whether any particular provision of the code has been amended, superseded, or repealed. Using the search field on the City Code page is helpful in finding any topic of concern.
