City office closed for February holiday
The City offices will close on Monday, Feb. 15, in observance of Presidents Day. However, garbage service will run as usual on Monday, Feb. 15.
Census Participation Is Vital
What if a census was held and nobody cared? That's the major worry of the once-a-decade nose count, which began last month. Experts worry that up to one in five inhabitants just don't care enough to take part. Our goal in Cedar Hills is 100% participation in the 2010 Census. In the census 10 years ago we had 63% participation.
Citizen indifference could be costly to the City. Beyond getting a firm count, the census has two other functions: State-by-state counts are the basis for adding or subtracting seats in the House of Representatives and designating where $400 billion in federal funds go for things like hospitals, job training centers, schools, senior centers, emergency services, bridges, and public works projects. The census also provides valuable information that can be used in diverse local applications like grant writing, eligibility for housing, and social actions.
In the continental U.S., the head-counting starts on March 15 via mailed-out forms with 10 questions, the shortest-ever survey. Forms must be mailed back by April 1. Then comes an army of door-knocking interviewers looking for non-respondents.
The 2010 Census theme “It’s In Our Hands” and tag line “We Can’t Move Forward Until You Mail It Back” reflect a public attitude that “It’s our census; it’s up to me and my community to make sure that we have a complete and accurate count.” There's no reason to fear the census and every reason to take part. By law, census takers do not share their work with other agencies, and state and city governments need every dime a full count will bring in federal money.
When the census form arrives, please be sure to mail the Census information back. Thank you for your participation. Mayor calls for rec center committee members
Mayor Richardson recently created the Community Recreation/Aquatics Center Blue Ribbon Committee to assist in giving input and assistance to City officials in shaping the potential of a center in our city. He is looking for volunteers to participate in the concept, research, and planning of the facility. Volunteers are a vital asset to the implementation of ideas, as they represent a broader spectrum of residents within the community. The committee will meet as needed and work with the mayor, planning commission, and council to "do well and willingly the tasks at hand." If you would like to be considered for service, please notify the City in person or e-mail your name and contact information to the City's Front Desk.
Easter Egg Hunt
The Youth City Council will host the City’s annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 27. Save the date, and watch for more details in next month’s newsletter.
It’s a good idea!
Clear shrubs and snow from fire hydrants, water meters, and gas meters to allow safety and service personnel easy access to these utilities.
IMPORTANT: Close PI valve before spring!
As soon as the snow melts enough to find your secondary water valve box, please make sure the main valve is in the CLOSED position. This will protect the pipes and sprinkler heads on your property from damage when the high-pressurized irrigation system is activated around April 15. Mark your calendars!

There’s a new law in town. Organizers of events, such as block parties held on a street, craft fairs and the like, will need to fill out an application with the City, pay a $100 fee, and show insurance. The application must be filed with the City 60 days before the event, and the applicant cannot advertise the event until the application is approved. The new special events ordinance provides a framework for the City to allow residents and organizations to stage events on public property. The council said this ordinance is needed because it sets rules on how and when event organizers can affect the flow of traffic and other public rights. Residents do not need an application for getting together as groups or families, but if the rights of others are going to be disrupted, the ordinance must be followed. The special events application can be obtained at the City offices.
North Utah County Library Cooperative
The cities of American Fork, Pleasant Grove, Lehi, and Eagle Mountain have agreed to participate in a reciprocal borrowing system that will allow library card holders at any of the cooperating libraries to check out materials from all four libraries. (This is not a county library system.) Library borrowers are encouraged to search for needed materials at their home library before searching the other libraries’ online catalogs. Each library will continue to function as it currently does in terms of policies, budget, administration, non-resident card fees, etc. Requests (holds) made to a library other than the home library will not be honored. The intent is to allow card holders of each library first access to the materials at that library.
American Fork City Arts Council
The AFAC invites Cedar Hills residents to participate in their arts events and performances. Click here for more information.
